Jane Robins | WHITE BODIES

Plot:

This chilling psychological suspense novel—think Strangers on a Train for the modern age—explores the dark side of love and the unbreakable ties that bind two sisters together.

Felix and Tilda seem like the perfect couple: young and in love, a financier and a beautiful up-and-coming starlet. But behind their flawless façade, not everything is as it seems.

Callie, Tilda’s unassuming twin, has watched her sister visibly shrink under Felix’s domineering love. She has looked on silently as Tilda stopped working, nearly stopped eating, and turned into a neat freak, with mugs wrapped in Saran Wrap and suspicious syringes hidden in the bathroom trash. She knows about Felix’s uncontrollable rages, and has seen the bruises on the white skin of her sister’s arms.

Worried about the psychological hold that Felix seems to have over Tilda, Callie joins an Internet support group for victims of abuse and their friends. However, things spiral out of control and she starts to doubt her own judgment when one of her new acquaintances is killed by an abusive man. And then suddenly Felix dies—or was he murdered?

Review:

So, around June I had begun to notice this beautiful cover all over Instagram and became obsessed. What is this WHITE BODIES and why is everyone raving about it? That's when I started my journey that had to end with me getting my hands on a copy. Well, thanks to Touchstone, that happened. I was pleasantly surprised when I finally got my hands on this wonderful novel. And let me tell you, it was worth the wait.

WHITE BODIES is a dark and delicious read that deals with obsession, lies, and love. It then takes these themes and blends them all together in a wonderfully claustrophobic plot that not only delivers, but takes you to where no book will ever take you. That, I guarantee. This book opens with a bang and does not let the smoke clear until the final page.

There is so much to enjoy about this book, it isn't even funny. I am a sucker for an unreliable narrator, and Callie did not disappoint. This narrator is obsessive, impulsive, and often one to not hold back. I loved the little excerpts of Callie and her twin sister, Tilda growing up and getting to see the comparison to them in their adult lives. What I loved so much about these two characters was Callie being the meek, normal one who works in a bookstore and Tilda being this overly emotional washed up actress. The personalities and how they interacted was not only spectacular, but at some points uncomfortable. Enter Felix, Tilda's new boyfriend and the sparks really fly. Callie believes Felix is abusive towards Tilda and joins a support group online. Let the obsession begin.

This book takes no prisoners. Each word, paragraph, page is necessary to the plot. There is no filler, there is no skimming, there is no wondering when this novel will be over. You've got three majorly messed up characters, a ton of suspense, and multiple references and comparisons to some of the great 90s horror movies. Blend that together with a plot similar to STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, FATAL ATTRACTION, and SINGLE WHITE FEMALE and what you've got is a pure winner. Jane Robins, I don't know where you came from or how you thought of this novel. What I do know, is from here on out what you write, I read. This is easily the best psychological thriller I have read in a long time. I was obsessed with it before I read it, I was even more obsessed while reading it, and I am still obsessed after finishing it.

*A very special thank you to Touchstone Books for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
