Emily Carpenter | EVERY SINGLE SECRET

Plot (via Goodreads):
Emotionally guarded Daphne Amos always believed she’d found a kindred spirit in her fiancé, Heath. Both very private people, they’ve kept their pasts hidden from the world, and each other, until Heath’s escalating nightmares begin to put an undeniable strain on their relationship. Determined to give their impending marriage the best chance of succeeding, Heath insists that Daphne join him on a seven-day retreat with Dr. Matthew Cerny, a psychologist celebrated for getting to the root of repressed memories. Daphne reluctantly agrees—even though the past is the last place she wants to go.
The retreat’s isolated and forbidding location increases her unease, as do the doctor’s rules: they must relinquish their keys and phones, they’ll be monitored at all hours by hidden cameras, and they’re never to socialize with the other guests.
One sleepless night, Daphne decides to leave her room…and only then does she realize that the institute is not at all what it seems—and that whatever’s crying out from Heath’s past isn’t meant to be heard. It’s meant to be silenced.

Review:

As usual, Emily Carpenter held me hostage with this novel. This plot is riveting, sensational, and difficult to let go of. What I love most about Carpenter's writing is her ability to capture atmosphere, tone, and really reveal her characters true personalities simultaneously.

The plot to this one is not only intricate and well-executed, but it is dark and haunting. I found myself starting this one and then was unable to take even the smallest of breaks. My hands refused to put this book down and I loved every minute of it. In true Carpenter form, the pacing with this novel hits the ground running and does not hold back, speeding up and rarely slowing down. With such a dark atmosphere that is eerie and characters that are taken straight out of a Stephen King novel with their unreliability and questionable actions, this one not only flew by, but shocked me to the core in its frightening finale.

If you love deep psychological thrillers, any of Carpenter's previous work, or just a great beach read that's going to bring you straight to your tanning goals and kill a few hours, this is the novel for you. It is immersive, brilliantly shaped, and heavily disguised in its prose. This is the novel that you read, you love, and you recommend to all of your friends because lets be honest, writing like this should be shared and discussed.

Special thanks to Amazon Publishing for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
