Margot Hunt | FOR BETTER AND WORSE

Plot (via Goodreads):

On their first date back in law school, Natalie and Will Clarke bonded over drinks, dinner and whether they could get away with murder. Now married, they’ll put the latter to the test when an unchecked danger in their community places their son in jeopardy. Working as a criminal defense attorney, Nat refuses to rely on the broken legal system to keep her family safe. She knows that if you want justice…you have to get it yourself.

Shocked to discover Nat’s taken matters into her own hands, Will has no choice but to dirty his, also. His family is in way too deep to back down now. He’s just not sure he recognizes the woman he married. Nat’s always been fiercely protective, but never this ruthless or calculating. With the police poking holes in their airtight plan, what will be the first to fall apart: their scandalous secret—or their marriage?

Review:

Last year, I read Best Friends Forever by Margot Hunt and really enjoyed it. It was twisty and suspenseful with the perfect setting. Well, it's no surprise that when I found out Margot Hunt was releasing another novel I had to get my hands on a copy. Did I really read the synopsis? Mostly. I just knew that it was something I needed to read because I enjoyed her debut so much. Well, let me tell you one thing - Margot Hunt kicked it up a few notches with this one.

For Better and Worse started off in the most enticing way. It was a conversation between our two main characters on their first date and the conversation swayed in a really serious and unexpected turn that seduces the reader enough to wonder two things: A) Where is this going? B) What effect will this have on the rest of the story? Well, a tale of a rather rocky relationship between two successful people really takes a turn when a big revelation is announced rather early in the novel to expose the reader to a web of deceit, vigilance and the perfect timeline for fans of all domestic suspense. I started this one in the hopes of knocking out 100 pages on Thanksgiving night and found myself flying through the pages. I was high on this story and once I got into it, I found myself at the point of no return and had zero regrets.

I loved reading about Natalie and Will. While all of the characters were well written in this novel and each served their purpose, I enjoyed how none of the characters (albeit maybe two) distracted the reader from the fact that this is a story best told by trailing Natalie and Will. Part one is Natalie's perspective and really builds the intensity and features brilliant pacing as the reader travels along a dark and ominous path where as part two deals with Will and the aftermath as well as their relationship once they've done something that is both remarkably terrifying and necessary. I loved the contrast between the different parts of this story and how Hunt really took a rather sensitive subject matter and handled it with grace and dignity within telling her story. The characters both were rather unlikeable, and yet I still rooted for them both. The story was perfectly paced for a domestic suspense, and the ending was sensational and made me want to cheers Margot Hunt. It was such a fun ride and I'm already excited for book three.

Special thanks to MIRA Books for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
