Karin Slaughter | BEYOND REACH

Plot (via Goodreads):

Sara Linton--resident medical examiner/pediatrician in Grant County, Georgia, --has plenty of hardship to deal with, including defending herself in a heartbreaking malpractice suit. So when her husband, Police chief Jeffery Tolliver, learns that his friend and coworker detective Lena Adams has been arrested for murder and needs Sara's help, she is not sure she can handle the pressure of it all.

But soon Sara and Jeffery are sitting through evidence, peeling back the layers of a mystery that grows darker by the day--until an intricate web of betrayal and vengeance begins to unravel. And suddenly the lives of Sara, Lena, and Jeffery are hanging by the slenderest of threads.

Review:

It's no secret to anyone who has ever read a Karin Slaughter book how truly dark they can get. I mean, we've been through it all and we are still proud members of the #slaughtersquad, but this one was by far the darkest read I've read by her. With Lena's guilt in question, Sara and Jeffrey trying to figure out what the hell happened, and the ending of this series approaching, I was dying to know what happened next and I was not prepared. This case was really dark and connected all of the inhabitants of Grant County poignantly and in such a thrilling manner.

In typical Slaughter fashion, she kind of combines two cases and really gives the reader an intrusive look into the lives of these characters that we have held so tightly in our hearts. The characters in this series and I have been through hell and back together and I knew she had a ton of tricks up her sleeve, but man - I was really not welcoming or emotionally prepared for such an ending. As sad as I am to say goodbye to this series, I cannot wait to dive into Will Trent in the same fashion.
