Kimmery Martin | THE ANTIDOTE FOR EVERYTHING
Plot (via Goodreads):
Georgia Brown’s profession as a urologist requires her to interact with plenty of naked men, but her romantic prospects have fizzled. The most important person in her life is her friend Jonah Tsukada, a funny, empathetic family medicine doctor who works at the same hospital in Charleston, South Carolina and who has become as close as family to her.
Just after Georgia leaves the country for a medical conference, Jonah shares startling news. The hospital is instructing doctors to stop providing medical care for transgender patients. Jonah, a gay man, is the first to be fired when he refuses to abandon his patients. Stunned by the predicament of her closest friend, Georgia’s natural instinct is to fight alongside him. But when her attempts to address the situation result in incalculable harm, both Georgia and Jonah find themselves facing the loss of much more than their careers.
Review:
Kimmery Martin is like Emily Giffin meets Grey's Anatomy meets a cozy and realistic read that you will want to sink your teeth into. Now, even though this is only my second Kimmery Martin book, I can tell you that she is one hell of a powerhouse author. Her stories just mesmerize and captivate you from the first page and her characters are sensationally written. Now, the thing I enjoyed about her debut was that there was something from the past that had been referenced throughout the book and when I found out what exactly it was, I was loving this high-drama and relatable plot that had such a dark backstory. With this one though, there was just so much to love about this book and I good honestly go on about it for days.
Once again, Kimmery gives us some sensationally written characters that you just need to hang out with. They are realistic and caring and funny and dazzling to be with. This is an author who gives you such vivid characters that you forget that something is about to happen in her novels because you just want to follow them around during their day-to-day activities. But, once that plot really kicks into gear and you start to see their lives unravel, it is a point-of-no-return type of read that will keep you immersed in its story and on the edge of your seat in such a stunning way. Now, I loved the way that Kimmery handled this story-line. It was timely, handled with grace and dignity, and the way that she wrote both sides of the argument was realistic and added such depth to the story and these characters. Obviously, as a member of the LGBTQ community, I was outraged and shocked reading the things happening with this story and I absolutely loved how Kimmery did not sugar-coat one single thing. It's harrowing and brilliant writing like this that gives you characters that you love and puts them in situations that breaks your heart that makes her books top-notch in my opinion. I hate reading romantic things in a book and I was rooting for one couple so much. Kimmery and these characters? You feel like they are your friends, and let me tell you - Kimmery Martin at this point is one of my best friends and we've not said one word to each other.
While this novel definitely was another fantastic read with a darker and ominous storyline that kept me invested, I will say there were some lighter and funny moments sprinkled throughout and the pacing for a novel that's not necessarily a thriller or suspense novel was on point. The love that Kimmery Martin puts into a story is not only abundantly clear within the first page, but it's the kind of love you'll feel when your emotions are high and your book-hangover is palpitating. I don't know how she does it, but I hope she never stops.
Special thanks to Berkley Publishing for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
