Lisa Gardner | WHEN YOU SEE ME
Plot (via Goodreads):
FBI Special Agent Kimberly Quincy and Sergeant Detective DD Warren have built a task force to follow the digital bread crumbs left behind by deceased serial kidnapper Jacob Ness. And when a disturbing piece of evidence comes to light, they decide to bring in Flora Dane who has personal experience of being imprisoned by Ness.
Their investigations take them to a small town deep in the hills of Georgia where something seems to be deeply wrong.
What at first seems like a Gothic eeriness soon hardens into something much more sinister as they discover that for all the evil Jacob committed while alive, his worst secret is still to be revealed.
Quincy and DD must summon their considerable skills and experience to crack the most disturbing case of their careers - and Flora must face her own past directly in the hope of saving others.
Review:
Okay, so it's no lie that I have completely bounced all over the place when it comes to the D.D. Warren series by Lisa Gardner. Thus far, I have only read and thoroughly enjoyed the stories featuring D.D. and Flora Dane because the dynamic between these characters is astonishing and Flora's backstory is definitely the most harrowing story I have yet to read. I found her story to be what really got me addicted to this series and I love reading about Flora and D.D. I have definitely been inspired to start this series from the beginning, but I already know that the installments that include Flora will be my favorite ones yet. Lisa Gardner just has this knack for writing imaginative stories with brilliant characters and wrapping them up in such atmospheric and eerie bows that will haunt you well after the last page.
The plot to this one was my favorite since Find Her. Tying a new case in with a third mysterious voice and perspective along with D.D. and Flora and a possible connection to Jacob Ness was brilliant and made this one fly by. I hate waiting a year in between Gardner novels, but I admire how she can make a 400+ page book something I can devour in one sitting. Kimberly Quincy who from my research tells me is another returning character from the Lisa Gardner universe also shows up in this story and definitely made me even more eager to go back through the back-list of Lisa Gardner books. With this story, I loved the mysterious third voice and the backstory within this one. The setting was not only eerie and chilling, but added a complete other layer to this story just by being so ominous and unsettling. Between the setting, the characters, and the story, this is definitely one of the darker reads that I have read by Gardner and I still enjoyed every single moment of it.
There isn't much I can say else regarding this one because the twists and turns and revelations make this a good read if you read it as a standalone, but an excellent read if you are continuing Flora's story. Between the characters, the history in this town and it's relation to Flora and her history, it was one hell of a maniacal ride with a prose that will captivate you from page one and make you eager for more D.D. and Flora novels to come before you even finish. I don't know how you do it, Lisa Gardner but I am a fan for life and I'm so thankful for all of the stories you give me.
Special thanks to Dutton for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
