J.T. Ellison - LIE TO ME

So, years and years ago when I lived in Boston, I loved the Taylor Jackson series by J.T. Ellison. I remember the cold winter nights that I discovered the first one on my Kindle and I was obsessed. This is my first Ellison novel since and I cannot believe how far she's come and how different this was compared to not only her Taylor Jackson series, but any other author.

Plot:

Sutton and Ethan Montclair's idyllic life is not as it appears. They seem made for each other, but the truth is ugly. Consumed by professional and personal betrayals and financial woes, the two both love and hate each other. As tensions mount, Sutton disappears, leaving behind a note saying not to look for her.

Ethan finds himself the target of vicious gossip as friends, family and the media speculate on what really happened to Sutton Montclair. As the police investigate, the lies the couple have been spinning for years quickly unravel. Is Ethan a killer? Is he being set up? Did Sutton hate him enough to kill the child she never wanted and then herself? The path to the answers is full of twists that will leave the reader breathless.

Review:

Wow. I knew the minute I opened this that I was in for something really special. Not to toot my own horn, but I was correct. Reading this, I had been trying and trying to not compare it to GONE GIRL, but the similarities in the plot had me jumping to conclusions. Dare I say, I think this one was just as good. Although the plots are similar to the naked eye, once you begin LIE TO ME, you'll realize how any comparison couldn't be farther from what's really going on. This was taut, emotional, suspenseful, and downright terrifying. While I won't spoil much, I will say there is a narrator that pops in from time to time that is so hungry for blood and destruction, I was chilled to the bone on a day that was eighty plus degrees in Northern New York.

I can't wait to read this again just writing my review...and I only finished it last night. The plot was not only suspenseful and intricate, but Ellison had really created a variety of complex characters who did a fantastic job of pointing the fingers at each other. I did not know who to like, who to hate, who to suspect, and who to trust during this entire reading process. I even gave a few side-eyes to the police force. Were they involved? What happened to Sutton? Do I feel bad for her? Did she get what she deserved? UGH. So. Many. Questions. Each character did a great job of providing a dire necessity to the plot. Not one character, no matter how big or small was wasted. I love this when reading. There were so many twists and turns from about page 10 to page 420, that my head was constantly spinning. A few times, I actually yelled "Oh my god!" out loud.

Ellison has created a world where nothing and no one is safe in this read. Even I, the reader didn't feel safe. Every creak, every groan, every breeze was suspect for me in the few days it took me to read this. Just when you think you have an idea or you are playing the guessing game in your mind, Ellison snatches away all of your thoughts and rips them to pieces in front of you. This was easily the most enjoyable thriller I have read since THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN. While I had the comparisons when marketing teams try to say this book is the next THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN or GONE GIRL, this is the next thriller that people need to be and will be talking about.

Rating: 5/5
