Ragnar Jonasson | THE MIST

Plot (via Goodreads):

1987. An isolated farm house in the east of Iceland.

The snowstorm should have shut everybody out. But it didn't.

The couple should never have let him in. But they did.

An unexpected guest, a liar, a killer. Not all will survive the night. And Detective Hulda will be haunted forever.

Review:

This year, I was feeling very conflicted on my anticipation of The Mist by Ragnar Jonasson. The reason for that is because I loved The Darkness and The Island so much, so I was eager to get my hands on The Mist, but I was devastated to know that this was the conclusion in this trilogy. I love Hulda so much and I had enjoyed and been beguiled reading her journey in the first two books. I loved that this trilogy was told backwards and I thought it was so unique to get to know this strong and bad-ass woman only to get to know her even more throughout her personal life in books two and three. Well, Jonasson did not disappoint with The Mist and I felt that each part of this series had their own special things that made them fight to be my favorite, The Mist may just be the most harrowing and captivating installment in this trilogy.

I loved the plot to this one. I was completely immersed between reading about Hulda and the secondary characters. There were a couple of different timelines with this one as well as character perspectives and they blended together so nicely that I just had to know what was going on at every single moment in this book. This trilogy is something I would recommend binge-reading on a long weekend (or just any if you don't need a lot of sleep) because these books are so hard to put down, especially this one. Now I absolutely loved the characters and how this story progressed; I felt that the pacing was superb and intense. The twists and turns and revelations come on strong and the ending was so satisfying and yet emotionally-charged. I loved how Jonasson not only wrapped up this story but also Hulda's story. Would I love to see her name pop up again? Absolutely. But know this, I am completely confident that Jonasson completed this work in the best way possible.

Special thanks to Minotaur Books for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
