Danielle Girard | WHITE OUT

Plot (via Goodreads):

After surviving a car accident on an icy road in Hagen, North Dakota, Lily Baker regains consciousness with no idea where or who she is. Scattered Bible verses and the image of a man lying in a pool of blood haunt her memory.

The same night of the accident, a young woman is murdered and tossed in a dumpster. Kylie Milliard, Hagen’s only detective, doesn’t immediately recognize the victim, but Kylie soon discovers that Lily and the dead woman share a dark past…if only Lily could remember what it was.

Lily and Kylie both want answers. But Kylie has to play by the book. Lily has to play it safe. And the more Lily learns about her identity, the more she fears the truth.

Review:

Danielle Girard is one of my favorite new authors. I love the Annabelle Schwartzman series and when Danielle offered to send me an ARC of White Out, I was obviously intrigued! What happened next was a race to get to the finish line in this captivating and immersive story. This one starts off right in the meat of the story and is relentless with its plot until the chilling final page. This one definitely had a great setting and helped me escape from the July heat as I was reading it (maybe once or twice I missed the snow) and I loved Girard's representation of an intelligent and badass female police officer who had such a three-dimensional personality. I love seeing female representation within crime fiction and Kylie Milliard is one of my favorite new protagonists! I am thankful that this story wrapped up because it was such a multi-layered mystery and I was dying to know what happened in the end and this story did not disappoint. I loved the combination of the police procedural along with the multiple character perspectives and just found this one impossible to put down.

If you want a strong start to a series that is both immersive and well-plotted, I would definitely recommend White Out. Halfway through this one, I was already ready for book number two and I can't wait to read more from Danielle Girard. My only drawback with this one was at times I felt overwhelmed with the amount of characters, but I still loved this story so much and the ending definitely made sense and felt satisfying.

Special thanks to Danielle Girard for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
