Review:

I have always, always loved Mary Kubica. In my opinion, she is the ultimate queen of domestic suspense and I am very happy to announce that The Other Mrs. is her darkest read yet. Combining equal parts of domestic suspense, psychological thriller, murder mystery, and a poignant story of a seemingly haunted house, this is definitely the most complex and captivating story that Kubica has crafted yet.

Told in three different perspectives, this tale is wound tight between a wife, the other woman, and a little girl growing up with an abusive and a rather unpleasant stepmother. This is the kind of stuff I love about Kubica's writing; each voice is so distinctive and each story is different from the other, creating a whirlwind of suspense and a top-notch story that will seep into your imagination in its relentless grip. What really solidifies Kubica as one of my favorite storytellers is that she doesn't have just characters going through the motions of a plot, but they carry the plot and provide the reader with exactly what Kubica wants them to know at that given time - almost as if these characters and the reader are Kubica's puppets and she is the ultimate puppet-master. I could not get over how captivated I was with this story and how fantastic of a plot this one was.

As the novel progressed, the twists and turns were endless and harrowing. There was so much going on that I'd love to go back and pay closer attention to the foreshadowing in this one as Kubica gives you small details that you need to know and does it so effortlessly that you don't realize that she is giving you major hints as to what is to come. My favorite Kubica novel and one of the best 2020 reads, The Other Mrs. is one that will be forever on my favorites bookshelf.
