Roz Nay | OUR LITTLE SECRET

Plot (via Goodreads):

They say you never forget your first love. What they don't say though, is that sometimes your first love won't forget you...

A police interview room is the last place Angela expected to find herself today. It's been hours, and they keep asking her the same inane questions over and over. "How do you know the victim?" "What's your relationship with Mr. Parker?" Her ex's wife has gone missing, and anyone who was close to the couple is a suspect. Angela is tired of the bottomless questions and tired of the cold room that stays the same while a rotating litany of interrogators changes shifts around her. But when criminologist Novak takes over, she can tell he's not like the others. He's ready to listen, and she knows he'll understand. When she tells him that her story begins a decade before, long before Saskia was in the picture, he gives her the floor.

A twenty-something young professional, Angela claims to have no involvement. How could she? It's been years since she and H.P., Mr. Parker that is, were together. As her story unfolds, it deepens and darkens. There's a lot to unpack... betrayal, jealousy, and a group of people who all have motives for retribution. If Angela is telling the truth, then who's lying?

Review:

OUR LITTLE SECRET by Roz Nay is one of those novels that just flew by for me. While it's a short and quick read, I still devoured it in two sittings because I was just dying to know what was going on.  I loved the way that Roz Nay wrote this story, all told from the perspective of one character. Our narrator is not only ballsy and tough, but extremely unreliable. I could not get enough of this one. I loved how Nay spent no time wasted by giving us a story that travels over ten years between Angela and HP.

Starting off light with an air of mystery, the pacing and grittiness of this novel increases as we travel along a storyline that is not for the faint of the heart. What quickly goes from a cute story about teenage love turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse, full of surprises and a shocking finale. I absolutely loved the way that Angela portrayed these characters through telling Detective Novak this story through her perspective, because I wondered if that's how things really played out or not. What if these people aren't even like how she's describing them? What if she is really innocent? What if she's extremely guilty? What if the world is against her? Would I trust the people she's trusting if I were in her position? These are just a few questions I asked myself during this read and not only did Roz Nay create even more, but all of my questions were answered by the final page....and my jaw was left hanging.
