Chandler Baker | WHISPER NETWORK
Plot (via Goodreads):
Sloane, Ardie, Grace, and Rosalita are four women who have worked at Truviv, Inc., for years. The sudden death of Truviv's CEO means their boss, Ames, will likely take over the entire company. Ames is a complicated man, a man they’ve all known for a long time, a man who’s always been surrounded by...whispers. Whispers that have always been ignored by those in charge. But the world has changed, and the women are watching Ames’s latest promotion differently. This time, they’ve decided enough is enough.
Sloane and her colleagues set in motion a catastrophic shift within every floor and department of the Truviv offices. All four women’s lives—as women, colleagues, mothers, wives, friends, even adversaries—will change dramatically as a result.
"If only you had listened to us,” they tell us on page one, “none of this would have happened."
Review:
The minute I saw the haunting and intriguing cover for Whisper Network by Chandler Baker, I knew this was going to be something interesting. Then, I saw that Flatiron was publishing it and I knew it was going to be something unique. Then, I read the synopsis and I was immediately hooked. What happened when I opened this novel and checked out the haunting and inviting prologue? An unhealthy relationship of obsession. Chandler Baker completely drew me into this novel with little-to-no preparation. There were three things that really sold this novel for me; the plot, the characters, and Baker's sensational way of telling a story.
The plot to this novel is perfect for the fans of Big Little Lies - not because it is too similar, but because the characters woven together with a plot that is sensationally paced and intriguing from page one is faultless. The way the plot is set up time-wise makes it impossible to put down. Big Little Lies meets the #METOO movement; Baker handles this novel with ease, empathy, and elegance. I think when you write a novel like this, you have to be really careful with certain subjects that can be triggers for your readers and Baker handled this plot with sensitivity and honesty - making it awe-inspiring and emotionally dazzling.
The characters in this story are brilliant. One thing I really admired and was stunned by with this novel was Baker's ability to make each characters personality just ooze off the pages without being over-the-top or cliche in any way. They are fierce, three-dimensional, and inspirational. Each one bringing something different to the plot, these are the kind of women you want to read about no matter where the story goes - but fear not, because this story really goes places. I was by far blown away with the depth of Sloane's personality as well as the sass and determination of Ardie; they were two of my favorite characters I have yet to read.
I loved this story. It was poignant, thrilling, and sensationally written. Baker took so many elements of what a fantastic read is for different genres and combined them into one dazzling novel that is just as enjoyable to think about as it was to read - remembering your favorite moments, the moments of shock, and the perfect ending. I cannot wait to see what Chandler Baker does next, but if she asked me to hold my breath until it was released, I wouldn't hesitate.
Special thanks to Flatiron Books for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
