Victoria Helen Stone | FALSE STEP
Plot (via Goodreads):
For days, all of Denver, Colorado, has worried over the fate of a missing child, little Tanner Holcomb. Then, a miracle: handsome, athletic Johnny Bradley finds him, frightened but unharmed, on a hiking trail miles from his wealthy family’s mountain home.
In a heartbeat, his rescuer goes from financially strapped fitness trainer to celebrated hero. The heat of the spotlight may prove too much for Johnny’s picture-perfect family, however. His wife, Veronica, despises the pressure of the sudden fame, afraid that secrets and bitter resentments of her marriage may come to light. And she’s willing to do anything to keep them hidden.
But when a shocking revelation exposes an even darker side to Tanner’s disappearance, Veronica realizes that nothing in her life can be trusted. And everything should be feared.
Review:
Last summer when I read Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone, I was mesmerized and completely captivated. It was wonderfully paced, deliciously diabolical, and at times hilarious. Jane was a lunatic and I just loved reading her character, no matter what mischievous things she was up to. Well, a year later and not only is there a sequel announced for Jane Doe, but Stone has released her latest thriller, False Step. While this one is more of a domestic and psychological thriller with less of the dark humor that made Jane Doe so enjoyable, but also just has a completely different feel.
Stone's talent is in my opinion - immensely noticeable when you see the contrast between Jane Doe and False Step. While Jane Doe is more twisty, False Step is an immersive and bewitching domestic suspense novel that has some great psychological aspects to it and a plot that just reels you in and holds the reader hostage until the intense and jaw-dropping finale. I would definitely consider this one a thriller that can be easily devoured in one sitting - it's entertaining, the characters are devilish and fun to read, and I was entertained the entire time.
Special thanks to Little Bird Publicity for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
