David Bell | LAYOVER
Plot (via Goodreads):
Joshua Fields takes the same flights every week for work. His life is a series of departures and arrivals, hotels and airports. During yet another layover, Joshua meets Morgan, a beautiful stranger with whom he feels an immediate connection. When it's time for their flights, Morgan gets up to leave, leans over and passionately kisses Joshua, lamenting that they'll never see each other again.
As Morgan slips away, Joshua is left feeling confused by what just happened between them. That's when he looks up and is shocked to see Morgan's face flashing on a nearby TV screen. He's even more shocked when he learns the reason why--Morgan is a missing person.
What follows is a whirlwind, fast-paced journey filled with lies, deceit, and secrets to discover the truth about why Morgan is on the run. But when he finally thinks every mystery is solved, another rears its head, and Joshua's worst enemy may be his own assumptions about those around him...
Review:
It is that time of year again! I always know when summer has approached as soon as the weather gets hot and a new David Bell novel lands on my doorstep! This is my fourth read from Bell and once again, he is one of the best storytellers. At about 25 pages into this one (with 375 pages to go), I sighed and said out loud "I love this already." David Bell has a way of mesmerizing me early on within one of his novels and keeping me spellbound throughout the entire read, and then frazzled at the end wondering how I managed to devour a 400 page book in not only a day, but with the same feeling as if I had read a short story. With David Bell, there's the book you think you're going to get, the book you actually get, and then a satisfied warmth that's like a blanket when you realize that David Bell completely took you for a wild ride with yet another thrilling read that has heart, a wild plot, and characters that are sensational and compliment the plot like a fine wine.
What I usually really enjoy with David Bell novels is that they always have a domestic feel to them and involve family, but with this one the domestic aspect was presented differently and didn't really involve the major mystery of the novel, which I found fascinating and a different chance of pace for a Bell novel, but I really enjoyed the direction this one went in. There's the domestic feel, but it's a little bit more in the background and sprinkled throughout in a really tightly woven way. I thought the plot to this one was a bit more of a faster paced plot compared to the previous Bell novels I've read, either that or I was just feverishly devouring it as a year can go by awfully quickly when you're waiting for another brilliant read from this author. I loved the plot to this one, the different directions it went in completely kept me immersed in the read and made it impossible to put down. The minute I did put it down, even if just for a second, I was compulsive with my theories, making me more maniacal with my need to continue down this twisted road where I didn't know what to expect.
David Bell only gets better with time. Each novel features such a distinctive voice alongside a plot that is so intricate with characters that really shine off the pages - it's clear you're diving into a Bell novel from the first page. Each time I wonder how he could possible outdo himself, I wait 364 days only for Bell to blow me away again. So, see you July 2020 Mr. David Bell.
