DJ Palmer | THE NEW HUSBAND

Plot (via Goodreads):

What makes Simon Fitch so perfect?

-He knows all her favorite foods, music, and movies.
-Her son adores him. He was there when she needed him most.
-He anticipates her every need.
-He would never betray her like her first husband.

The perfect husband. He checks all the boxes.

The question is, why?

Nina Garrity learned the hard way that her missing husband, Glen, had been leading a double life with another woman. But with Glen gone—presumably drowned while fishing on his boat—she couldn't confront him about the affair or find closure to the life he blew apart.

Now, a year and a half later, Nina has found love again and hopes she can put her shattered world back together. Simon, a widower still grieving the death of his first wife, thinks he has found his dream girl in Nina, and his charm and affections help break through to a heart hardened by betrayal. Nina's teenage son, Connor, embraces Simon as the father he wishes his dad could have been, while her friends see a different side to him, and they aren't afraid to use the word obsession.

Nina works hard to bridge the divide that’s come between her daughter and Simon. She wants so badly to believe her life is finally getting back on track, but she’ll soon discover that the greatest danger to herself and her children are the lies people tell themselves.

Review:

Last year, everyone was raving about DJ Palmer's debut novel Saving Meghan and unfortunately I was one of the few who was unable to read it due to prior reading commitments but after The New Husband, I'll definitely be sure to scoop up the paperback copy when I have time. I really enjoyed this novel for what it was! The New Husband is a twisty and entertaining domestic suspense novel that had one hell of a creepy opening and then slowly but surely dove back into the heart of the story. I love openings like this one; the ones that really suck you in and then drawback to a slower pacing. I will say, this one definitely has a slower pacing compared to some of the other thrillers and suspense novels I've been reading, but I think that' what you should expect with domestic suspense and when it comes to this area of the genre, Palmer is an exceptional storyteller that builds his plot around vivid characters that were well-written and really did a great job of assisting Palmer in telling the story.

I loved the different viewpoints of this one and felt that all three really brought something different to the story, especially Maggie; I found Maggie's chapters to be the most fun and loved how Palmer really did a fantastic job with her character especially. Palmer captured the teenage mind with perfection and these chapters were so refreshing for me to read. While the pacing of this one was a bit slower, I still found myself immersed in the mystery, especially with a major twist coming around halfway through the book, then it was game-on and there was no turning back. The additional plot-lines were great to read and I loved the small twists and turns they provided.

Overall, I found this one enjoyable and entertaining - similar to a good Lifetime movie - it was a step above compared to others in this genre and one that I would recommend for someone who wants a thrilling story that focuses on family dynamics and isn't too bloody or violent. If you want to get lost in a story and escape reality for a bit, I would definitely recommend picking this one up.

Special thanks to St. Martins Press for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
