Heather Gudenkauf | THIS IS HOW I LIED

Plot (via Goodreads):

Twenty-five years ago, the body of sixteen-year-old Eve Knox was found in the caves near her home in small-town Grotto, Iowa—discovered by her best friend, Maggie, and her sister, Nola. There were a handful of suspects, including her boyfriend, Nick, but without sufficient evidence the case ultimately went cold.

For decades Maggie was haunted by Eve’s death and that horrible night. Now a detective in Grotto, and seven months pregnant, she is thrust back into the past when a new piece of evidence surfaces and the case is reopened. As Maggie investigates and reexamines the clues, secrets about what really happened begin to emerge. But someone in town knows more than they’re letting on, and they’ll stop at nothing to keep the truth buried deep.

Review:

I think Heather Gudenkauf is one of those authors that isn't afraid to get her hands dirty when she writes. I find her stories emotionally and gritty, perfectly woven multi-layered story-lines that really connect the reader with the characters. This is How I Lied is no exception. Featuring a rather violent and harrowing first chapter, this is the compelling drama thriller that you need to completely immerse yourself in.

I loved the plot to this one. Featuring a cold case murder related to our main characters, dual perspectives, and a timeline that weaves together the past and the present in such small details that it's like putting a puzzle together. I was completely captivated from the first chapter and this one was impossible to put down. The thing that I loved about this story was the character development. To avoid anything even close to a spoiler, I will say that the timeline and character perspectives really created a devastating world to immerse yourself in with this novel and one character in particular I found so unlikable in the beginning was someone I was rooting for by the end. I found the pacing to be really sensational with this one and as addictive as the first chapter was, I really was head-first down the rabbit hole by page 50 and there was no looking back.

There were so many red herrings with this one and I kept going back and forth between who I thought was responsible for the murder of Eve. I loved how Gudenkauf painted a picture of what this town and Eve's friends and family was like so many years after her death and also what lead to Eve's death in the past. The timelines were parallel to each other when it came to revelations and kept me so emotionally invested in this story. If you want something psychologically dark with domestic elements, but not overly violent, you need to not only check out all of Heather Gudenkauf's books, but especially this one. I cannot wait to see what she does next.
