Megan Goldin | THE NIGHT SWIM
Plot (via Goodreads):
After the first season of her true crime podcast became an overnight sensation and set an innocent man free, Rachel Krall is now a household name―and the last hope for thousands of people seeking justice. But she’s used to being recognized for her voice, not her face. Which makes it all the more unsettling when she finds a note on her car windshield, addressed to her, begging for help.
The small town of Neapolis is being torn apart by a devastating rape trial. The town’s golden boy, a swimmer destined for Olympic greatness, has been accused of raping a high school student, the beloved granddaughter of the police chief. Under pressure to make Season Three a success, Rachel throws herself into interviewing and investigating―but the mysterious letters keep showing up in unexpected places. Someone is following her, and she won’t stop until Rachel finds out what happened to her sister twenty-five years ago. Officially, Jenny Stills tragically drowned, but the letters insists she was murdered―and when Rachel starts asking questions, nobody seems to want to answer. The past and present start to collide as Rachel uncovers startling connections between the two cases that will change the course of the trial and the lives of everyone involved.
Review:
Chilling and sensational, The Night Swim by Megan Goldin is easily one of my favorite reads of the summer if not 2020. I've read about six books since I finished this one and so many of the characters and the scenes are still emblazoned in my mind. I loved how this one had basically three points of view between Hannah and her sister growing up, Rachel in the present time, and the podcast that was so well-written that I am still fighting the urge to search for it on Apple.
Goldin has a way of writing really eerie moments (most of which happen in the daylight) and yet still keeping you immersed in a thrilling and poignant novel that deals with two cases that may or may not be linked. Honestly, I was enjoying both stories so much and found myself completely gripped by both that I would love to read this one again and search for clues and some things that I may have missed by being beguiled by Goldin's storytelling abilities. To say that this is a book that will stay with you for a long time is an understatement. Goldin's writing is sensational, the characters are brilliantly written, and the way that she was able to write all of these points of view that lead to an explosive and shocking ending was amazing.
Do I want to write about this and talk about this book forever? Yes. But is this going to be a shorter review? Yes. I can't fathom giving too much away about this novel when I think that I should leave it with the fact that these characters and scenes stuck with me for so long and one scene in particular I read three times because it was so chilling and harrowing. This will forever be one of my most favorite reads and if you read it, please hit me up on Instagram and lets discuss it for all of its brilliance in its entirety. Pick up your copy now, this one is nothing short of sensational.
Special thanks to St. Martins Press for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
