S.A. Cosby | BLACKTOP WASTELAND
Beauregard "Bug" Montage: husband, father, honest car mechanic. But he was once known - from North Carolina to the beaches of Florida - as the best getaway driver on the East Coast. Just like his father, who disappeared many years ago.
After a series of financial calamities (worsened by the racial prejudices of the small town he lives in) Bug reluctantly takes part in a daring diamond heist to solve his money troubles - and to go straight once and for all. However, when it goes horrifically wrong, he's sucked into a grimy underworld which threatens everything, and everyone, he holds dear . . .
Review:
This review is going to be short and sweet because while I loved Blacktop Wasteland by S.A. Cosby, all of the things I loved about it were basically blurbed about pre-release, which is a great thing! This novel is gritty and very well written and definitely reminiscent of film noir. It would be such a phenomenal movie because this story has it all. Bug is one of my favorite protagonists that I've read about and with each page I was a little bit more sad knowing that this book was going to end. You know those stories where you have a character making a decision you know is wrong and you just want to shake them like "WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?!" Well, congratulations Mr. Cosby because this is one of those rare gems where even when Bug makes decisions you know are bad, Cosby does a brilliant job of why Bug does what he does and why things like this happen.
The plot to this one is seamless and flows perfectly; it allows the reader to get to know every single detail of what the characters are doing without being overbearing with detail. I loved how Bug was the main character, but Cosby gave us so many other viewpoints from the secondary characters and it just made the story even more immersive. Combining equal parts of noir, suspense, and action, Blacktop Wasteland was easily one of my favorite and quickest reads of 2020. For something that is not usually my type of read - I generally focus more on thrillers and suspense, especially those involving serial killers or murder - I found myself quickly enthralled with this story and battling an inner conflict of not wanting it to end and also needing to know where this story went. When you're so wrapped up in a book and then you wonder what the last line will be and who will be left standing, you know that you've got your fingers flipping through a winner.
I absolutely loved this book and I can only articulate it so well. If you want something that's compelling and unique and complex, I suggest you pick up a copy of Blacktop Wasteland. This is the kind of story that through a generous plot, hypnotic and sensational writing, and vivid characters will keep you gripped within its pages. I cannot wait to read more from S.A. Cosby.
Special thanks to Flatiron Books for this copy in exchange for my honest review.
